The Journey of Chak De India
Shimit Amin's film, Chak De India, which premiered on August 10, 2007, was not initially expected to achieve the success it did. The film's first trailer, showcasing Shah Rukh Khan's hockey team, was poorly received. However, the film's release turned out to be a different story altogether. Interestingly, Salman Khan was the first choice for the role of coach Kabir Khan in Chak De.
Several theories circulate regarding Salman Khan's decision to step away from the project. One suggestion is that he requested a higher fee from producer Aditya Chopra, which led to a delay in their collaboration until Ek Tha Tiger, where he received his desired amount. Another theory posits that Salman sought script modifications that director Shimit Amin was unwilling to accommodate. Consequently, Shah Rukh Khan took over the role, and the film became a landmark in his career, especially given his prior experience with hockey.
Chak De India had a slow start at the box office, receiving a mixed initial response. However, it gained momentum over the weekend, ultimately becoming the second highest-grossing film of 2007, following Om Shanti Om.
In a reflective interview, Shah Rukh Khan expressed his belief that hockey is significantly overlooked in India. He shared, 'I used to play hockey in college and was quite skilled at it. Taking on this role felt like revisiting my past. We even had real Australian female hockey players participating in the film, and it was incredible to witness their professionalism.'
He also addressed the misconception that he prefers to work only with familiar directors, stating, 'I collaborate with Yash Raj Films and Karan Johar as much as I do with new directors. Films like Swades and Don were with first-time directors for me. Working with Shimit Amin on Chak De India was a fresh experience, and I find the concept of a hockey-themed film fascinating.'
